Why Joyfulnics?

Hi! Maybe you found us because you’re a parent interested in phonics, an educator looking for resources, or perhaps you’ve seen us on Instagram. Whatever the reason, I’m so glad you’re here. Welcome to my little corner of the internet—where there’s no shortage of information about literacy and phonics-based educational products.

What I truly hope to do through this passion project is share what I do and what I’ve learned along the way—and in doing so, bring a little joy into your home or classroom.

I’ve spent several years working in literacy intervention with children with dyslexia as well as children without. When I took the Orton-Gillingham course, I remember thinking how much phonics would have helped make reading and spelling feel less daunting for me as a child. From that moment on, I was convinced that phonics provides a strong foundation for literacy—especially in reading and spelling.

Of course, phonics is not the only way to learn to read and spell. But in my experience, it has consistently proven to be an effective and empowering foundation.

Over the years, I’ve used the same deck of flashcards I received during my Orton-Gillingham training in my work with children. Still, I always wished the cards were more colourful, more engaging, more durable, and more accessible for parents and educators without specialised training.

What began as a small project—to create my own set of letter sound flashcards for my classes—slowly grew into something I wanted to share with others through Joyfulnics. My heart behind it was simple: to make phonics accessible, fun, and doable.

I’m not an expert, and I still have so much to learn as I continue on this teaching journey. Joyfulnics is not a new approach that I created. Rather, it’s a thoughtful blend of what I gained from my Orton-Gillingham training, my classroom experiences, and my own personal take on teaching phonics.

Our letter sounds flashcards features illustrations I created, keywords chosen with children in mind, and a whole lot of love poured into every detail. I truly believe flashcards don’t have to be boring. There’s something special about seeing children excited using these cards for card drills and other literacy activities.

That’s why we named our small business “Joyfulnics”—phonics that brings joy.
